Bharti Group was founded in 1976 by Sunil bharti Mittal and the group is currently is in its first generation. The group's flagship company is one of the largest telecom service providers in India, a business which was set up in 1995. It operates under the brand name 'Airtel' in more than 17 different countries across Asia & Africa. With a strong foothold in India which is the second largest smartphone and telecom market in the world, the group's foreign operations are a part of the long-term diversification plan.
The group diversified into the fast expanding retail sector of India by setting up small and medium stores. Other group ventures include distribution of telecom / IT products, insurance and others.
In spite of the telecom price wars in the past, Bharti Group has emerged a winner as they have constantly grown and consolidated in turbulent times. With competition intensifying post 4G licenses, it is anyone's guess whether the group can continue to grow as it did in the past. However, considering the resilience of its brand and presence, the are surely a force to reckon with.
